Travertine Care

First things first, travertine is a natural stone and thus a porous material. It is not as hard or dense as granite which is why it is generally not used for countertops. While it is stone and it is very durable; it will stain if not cared for properly. It is also sensitive to acidic liquids such as coffee and oj which will etch unsealed travertine.

Travertine like most hard flooring is quick and easy to care for properly.

1. Treat the travertine stone with a protective sealer.

Treating the travertine with a sealer will fill in the porous surface which helps repel damaging liquids allowing you to simply wipe them away. There are many sealers available just make sure you pick one that is suitable for travertine.

2. Clean the travertine with the proper cleaner.

DO NOT USE GENERAL PURPOSE HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS ON TRAVERTINE!!!

These will etch the stone or damage the sealer allowing the stone to become more likely to stain. In general travertine can be cleaned with a  sponge and hot water. For tough spots you should use a pH-balanced cleaner specifically designed to clean natural travertine stone.

3. Wipe up spills immediately.

Even if the travertine has been properly sealed you should still keep it clean. Acidic liquids left on a sealed stone can eat away the sealer and stain the stone.

That being said properly installed and cared for travertine is a timeless natural stone which matches almost any decor and will last a lifetime.
